David has been with the Jones Law Firm for six years. He has been a practicing attorney in Colorado since 2004, with a background in criminal, immigration, and family law. Prior to becoming an attorney, David spent the 1990’s working with and on behalf of children in a variety of settings including preschools, after school programs, residential youth programs, and during his two years of service with the AmeriCorps program.

David’s decades of working with and on behalf of children and families is central to his family law practice. He believes that helping folks navigate through what is one of the most stressful events of their life can be of great benefit to both the parents getting divorced and the children impacted by the process. David helps clients understand how the process of a divorce or other family law matter will play out, from the filing of a petition to a final order being issued by a Judge to help clients manage the stress of engaging in what is often a foreign experience. David’s years of experience as a courtroom litigator have helped him develop highly prepared strategies to assure outcomes in the best interest of the client and their children.

Education – David received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1993, a Juris Doctorate from Howard University School of Law in 2004, and a Masters of Law Degree from the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law in 2007.

What you may not know: David serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Racial Equity and Excellence (IREE) and is member of the Board of Directors of Early Milestones Colorado.

As an urban farmer, David enjoys donating thousands of pounds of home-grown organic produce each year to the free produce stand provided as part of the food pantry provided by the Greater Park Hill Community Association. David is a Certified Master Gardener, a member of the Denver Master Gardeners association, and the leader of the community garden at The Urban Farm in Denver.

A wife of more than 40 years sought the firm’s help when her husband began to exhibit signs of dementia, and others had attained power of attorney for him.  The marriage was falling apart, and he had moved to another state. The team was able to devise a plan that resulted in the court applying a legal standard aimed at assessing the ability of her husband to participate in the proceedings.  As our client sought, the Court appointed a guardian ad litem to look out for the interests of her husband, as well as a conservator to protect his assets. After this the parties were able to reach an amicable resolution to the case without further action of the court needed.

A father came to our firm seeking to gain more parenting time with his children and reassess and recalculate his child support obligation.  Having equal time with his children was of paramount importance, and father agrees to engage a child and family investigator to investigate, report, and make recommendations to the court.  The report was the key that unlocked the door to more parenting time for dad. With his increase in parenting time, as well as the changed incomes of the parties, he was also able to see his monthly child support obligation cut in half.
