As one client put it, “Not a day went by when I did not receive a document, a question, or an answer from them.” — A.A.

Colorado family law moves fast once you have been served, and deadlines can shape everything from temporary parenting time to financial orders. With 47,174 registered attorneys in Colorado as of the end of 2024, choosing a family-law lawyer is less about finding anyone, and more about finding a team you trust to take control and execute.

We make the process manageable by giving you a clear plan, a realistic assessment of outcomes, and consistent communication so you are not guessing what happens next. If you are fighting for more parenting time or a spouse served with divorce papers, we are here to guide you every step of the way.

Understanding Family Law and Why It Matters in Denver

Family law is the area of law that deals with legal problems involving your family, your finances, and your future.

In Denver and across Colorado, that commonly includes divorce, legal separation, parenting time and decision-making, child support, spousal support, and dividing property and debt. It can also include protection orders and post-decree changes when life shifts after a court order is already in place.

If you are a high-income professional, the stakes are often higher than people expect. Income can be variable, bonuses and equity can be disputed, and the paper trail matters. And if you were served as the respondent, you are already on the clock with deadlines, required disclosures, and decisions that can shape the future for years.

Denver courts move a lot of cases. According to Denver County Court, the court processes about 100,000 cases per year on average, one reason family-law disputes in Denver benefit from clear guidance and organized filings. When a case is busy and procedural, small missteps can create big problems.

Colorado is also a no-fault divorce state, meaning the legal reason is that the marriage is “irretrievably broken.” That keeps the focus on outcomes, not blame. The right local family-law team helps you protect what matters most with a strategy built for Colorado rules, Denver-area judges, and the realities of your case.

“Doing the hard things means telling the truth, preparing carefully, and guiding people forward with clarity and care.”

Proven defense for respondents, including false allegations and aggressive temporary order requests

Divorce in Colorado: What to Expect

Colorado is a no-fault divorce state, which means the court is not deciding who caused the marriage to end.

For respondents (the person or party who responds to a legal action), that is often a relief, but it can also feel like you are already behind because you were served first. You are not behind. You still have real leverage, real rights, and real decisions to make.

Here is the general flow most Colorado divorces follow:

  • Petition and Response: One spouse files and the other responds. As the respondent, your response is where you start protecting parenting time, property, support, and the narrative of the case.
  • Temporary orders (if needed): Either party can ask the court to set short-term rules for parenting time, bills, use of the home, and support while the case is pending.
  • Financial disclosures: Both sides exchange sworn financial information. This often drives settlement value, so accuracy and documentation matter
  • Negotiation and mediation: Many cases resolve through settlement talks or mediation once the facts are clear. We push for your goals while staying focused on outcomes.
  • Trial (if necessary): If settlement isn’t possible, you need courtroom-ready advocacy supported by evidence and credible testimony.

When you should talk to a lawyer

  • You were served and don’t know what you can safely agree to
  • Your spouse is seeking unequal parenting time or making allegations
  • The finances are complex (business interests, large retirement accounts, etc.)
  • You need temporary orders to stabilize parenting time or finances now

Understanding Child Custody and Parenting Time in Denver

Denver courts decide custody based on the best interests of the child—safety, stability, and healthy relationships, not who “wins.”

Most custody issues fall into two areas:

  • Decision-making: Major choices like education, medical care, and religion
  • Parenting time: The schedule (school-year vs. summer, exchanges, communication rules, make-up time, sharing updates)

A strong parenting plan should clearly cover:

  • Weekly schedule, holidays, birthdays, and vacations
  • Exchanges (transportation, location, late pickup)
  • Communication (with the child and between parents)
  • School/extracurricular decisions and access to records
  • How disputes are handled before going back to court

If circumstances change, you may need a modification, which generally requires showing a meaningful change and a plan that protects stability.

Our Process For Denver Families

  1. Intake with a Client Relationship Professional (free 45-minute consultation): You explain what happened, what you were served with, and what matters most. We flag urgent deadlines and risks and outline the fastest steps to stabilize your situation.
  2. Strategy session + Round Table Brain Trust: If we take your case, we build a clear plan and pressure-test it with multiple attorneys and key staff, considering the facts, the judge/county dynamics, and likely moves from the other side.
  3. Action plan + client portal onboarding: We turn strategy into a written action list—what we’ll file, what we need from you, and expected milestones. You get secure portal access for documents, messages, and task checklists.
  4. Execution (negotiation or litigation): We pursue strong temporary orders, enforce parenting time, and seek fair support and property outcomes. We negotiate from strength or prepare for court as needed, with proactive updates so you’re never guessing.

Resolution + ongoing support: After final orders, we assist with enforcement, post-decree modifications, and, when appropriate, estate planning updates to protect your children and assets.

April and staff were wonderful.

I will be recommending friends, family, and associates to Jones Law.

“When I needed legal assistance I emailed roughly a dozen law firms that came up in a Google search. Jones Law was the only firm that got back to me with a personalized message about my particular situation. When I arrived for my appointment I was greeted by Emily Sturgill to go over my case. Emily was awesome. She walked through my information & was very empathetic to my situation. I later met with David Collins to address my issue. David was great & completely understood what I wanted & gave me a very quick resolution. I will be recommending friends, family, and associates to Jones Law.”

Ms. Jones’ best quality as an attorney is her ability to take charge.

“Ms. Jones was my attorney in 2002. She is sharp, quick and strong and we won my case decisively. I am currently having Ms. Jones represent me again on another issue in 2010-2011. Based on my observation, Ms. Jones is sharper and stronger and has attained greater knowledge and insight. I have noticed that Ms. Jones desires to win each case with integrity. She cares about her client’s welfare at all times. Ms. Jones’ best quality as an attorney is her ability to take charge. I have recommended Ms. Jones to my friends and co-workers.”

April settled my case literally out in the courthouse hallway.

“April settled my case literally out in the courthouse hallway.I had a landlord that failed to make promised repairs to my apartment. I was paying for a two bedroom, two bathroom place but only one bathroom worked. He said he would repair it when I moved in but 7 months went by and he was still making excuses. He lived in hawaii, the apartment was in california and he used that as his excuse. I decided to stop paying him until he fixed the bathroom I had BEEN paying for. After 3 months of that he arrived at my apartment and decided to take me to court rather than fix the bathroom and collect back rent which I had been holding onto. April negotiated a deal before we went into court for an immediate cash payment for 1 month and I could take a week to move out. My landlord accepted and a possible unlawful detainer ruling was avoided. I was able to use the 2 months rent I still had to find another apartment which would have been much harder to do with a unlawful detainer on my record.”
